International Year of Chemistry 2011
The International Year of Chemistry 2011 will celebrate the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well being of humankind. The IYC connects people through events to enjoy and learn throughout the world. Around the world, from international to local level, the IYC is a chance for anyone to participate.
The goal of the International Year of Chemistry is to increase the public appreciation of chemistry in meeting world needs, increase interest of young people in chemistry, and generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry. 2011 is the 100th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Marie Curie. This is also an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of women to chemistry.
Under the primary leadership the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and the United Nations Education, Science, and Culture Organization (UNESCO), the IYC will take place through the efforts of learned societies, universities, and research facilities.
Japanese efforts
“International Year of Chemistry Japan Committee” was established in our country through efforts of government and academic societies. This committee has allotted work to two subcommittees, a planning committee and an executive committee, thereby enacting various related projects.
Greeting
The Chemical Society of Japan has independently established an International Year of Chemistry Committee and planned exhibitions and symposia. A special exhibit““Your Magic - It’s chemistry” exhibition” will be on display this fall with a regular chemistry exhibit at the Miraikan in Tokyo. Due to the Tohoku Earthquake, the International Year of Chemistry Memorial Symposium scheduled for the 2011 Annual Spring Meeting was cancelled, however it has been rescheduled for this autumn.
Chemistry has to date produced new technology and materials of use to us, but through these IYC events we hope that people can feel the fascination, mystery, wonder, and attraction of chemistry. We hope that the next generation will take interest in chemistry and build a bright future.

The Chemical Society of Japan/ links/ access/ membership information
The Chemical Society of Japan was established in 1878, has over 130 years of history and tradition, has about 30,000 members, and is the biggest chemical society in Japan. Becoming a member of CSJ can provide chemistry specialist credentials and conferences as well as other special privileges.
